Mountain Hardwear Base Camp in Escalante, Utah
By Clark Johnson
May 12, 2008

Escalante was my first experience in the southwest desert. I had heard stories about slot canyons, but those words couldn’t come close to experiencing it first hand. Needless to say, the Mountain Hardwear base camp was an amazing experience. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of folks to share my time with. I think the highlight of everyone’s time in Escalante was taking an adventure with Sick Rick into the slot canyons. I’ve had many experiences with guides over the years and Rick was by far one of the best. He made everyone feel like a big family and made sure everyone was safe and having a good time. His hospitality is matched only by few, which was certainly seen when he hosted a get together at his house one night. The MHW boys set us up well and we were trying out their new gear the whole time we were there. I would also like to extend thanks to Escalante Outfitters for their amazing service and unbelievable food. Give those guys a visit if you are ever in town!

There was always something to do and it seemed that there was never enough time to do it. Our fun ranged from rappelling into slot canyons, to hiking to a waterfall, and even shooting guns in the desert. I’m glad I was able to drive down with Vance and Evan for this great experience. Ol’ Blue even turned 200,000!
